Henna/Mehndi is derived from a tall shrub or a small tree known as the Lawsonia Inermis. The central veins of the leaves from this shrub contain Lawsone molecules. Lawsone is a red-orange dye and it chemically reacts with Keratin in the skin and hair resulting in a strong permanent stain. The stain lasts until the layer of skin or hair is shed.

The mehndi paste is made by firstly picking and drying young leaves in the shade. The young leaves have the highest dye concentration n the central vein. Once the leaves are dry to crisp the are grinded into a powder using a mortar and pestle. Once all the leaves have been grounded the powder is sieved through a muslin cloth or a fine sieve several times to ensure the powder is very fine and there are no stems or leaves in the powder.

The power is mixed with a combination of essential oils, lemon juice, sugar and water to a smooth consistency and then left for several hours to soak. Once the paste has soaked it is transferred to application cones and sealed. The henna is now ready to apply.
